Built in red sandstone, the historic city of Fatehpur Sikri conceptualized by Akbar the Great, is one of the brilliant examples of architectural creations. One of the favorite tourist attractions in India, Fatehpur Sikri was completed in 1578, and built in honor of the Sufi Saint, Sheikh Salim Chishti by offering prayers to whom Akbar could fulfill his desire of a male heir.
Strongly speaking of the religious tolerance of Akbar, the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri depicts a healthy blend of Hindu and Islamic styles of architecture. The post and beams depict Hindu style of architecture while the domes show a Muslim influence. The city built in red sandstone with a host of palaces, gardens, mosques, pools reveal Akbar's architectural genius. Traces of Gujrati, Rajasthani and Persian essences are evident in the city of Fatehpur Sikri.
The main attractions found in Fatehpur Sikri are as follows:
Buland Darwaza: The Buland Darwaza serves as the main doorway, massive in form, to the city of Fatehpur Sikri. Rising up to 54 meters, the Buland Darwaza was also referred to as the Victory Gate, because it was particularly built to honor Akbar's victory over the Marathas. The rich and grand gateway was surely an example of Mughal victory and the Mughal dominance over India.
Diwan-i-Am: Literally meaning the hall of Public Audience, the Diwan-i-Am was used as the court of the king for celebrations and prayers. The porch on the western side seated the throne of the King. The trellis detached the women enclosure from the rest of the court.
Diwan-i-Khas: The hall of private audience, this amazing architectural creation consists of a single arched chamber with the colossal Lotus Throne Pillar.
Palace of Jodha Bai: Quintessence of a fusion of Rajput and Gujrati architectural styles, Jodha Bai's Palace is a large mansion constructed by Akbar for his Hindu wife who was a Hindu lady. One of the largest mansions in Fatehpur Sikri, consisting of high walls and also a 9m guarded gate, it is one of the finest tourist attractions in Agra.
