Akbar's Tomb at Sikandara

On your tour to Agra, make sure to visit one of the favorite tourist attractions in India - Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra. It leads you to the tomb of one of the greatest emperors ever - Akbar. Started by Akbar and completed by Jahangir, the tomb depicts the influence of Timurid architecture. It also houses the red sandstone tomb of Mariam, the wife of Akbar.

Situated on the highway to Delhi, a little away from Agra, Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra stands as one of the eminent tourist attractions in Agra. Mostly built in marble, it is enclosed by a walled structure and a big vaulted gateway which is characteristically Mughal, with its set of minarets and inlaid work. The finely engraved latticework, various religious inscriptions on the walls and the beautifully adorned walls with beautiful paintings make it one of the most visited tourist attractions in India, flaunting the typical Mughal architecture.

The basement of the monument of Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra wherein lies the tomb of the monarch, is to be reached through a portico. The portico is strikingly beautiful decorated with the stucco paintings which depict floral representations in gold, blue, and green emitting the flavor of Persia.

The southern chamber of the Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra is elaborately decorated. Built during the span between 1612 and 1614, the mausoleum was referred to by Akbar as Behistabad or the Abode of Paradise. Much in lines of the Panch Mahal in Fatehpur Sikri, this one of the greatest tourist attractions in Agra bears innumerable canopied structures or the chattris, a distinguishing feature of Islamic mausoleums. At the gateway there are four towering minarets that are reminiscent of the dominance of the Mughal dynasty.

Expansive lush green fields outside the monumental gateway of Buland Darwaza have made it a natural home for the birds and deer lending an additional attraction for the visitors.

You tour to Agra will throw up a huge selection of tourist attractions and Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra is one of the best, portraying the philosophy of Akbar and the stunning yet elegant architectural genius of the Mughal architecture.
