Having ruled for nearly two hundred years, the Mughals have had their influence strongly imprinted in the pages of Indian history. Art and architecture are some of the areas where they have made their presence felt largely. In fact, Mughal architecture has been one of the most imposing architectural styles in the world. The monuments and structures built by the Mughals in India are glaring instances of the fact. The Bulund Darwaza built by the Mughals stands as one of the major tourist attractions in India.
On your tour to Agra you cannot miss out on a visit to one of the finest tourist attractions in Agra - the Bulund Darwaza. The Persian inscriptions on the archway have it that this south facing monumental gateway at Fatehpur Sikri was conceived and created by Akbar as the main entrance to the mosque to honor his conquest over Deccan in 1601. It speaks of the grandeur of Akbar's empire. It towers up to 40.84 m and stands on a platform that is 13.52 m high. A fine example of Islamic architecture, it is semi octagonal in plan and features two smaller triple-storeyed wings on either side.
A flight of 42 stairs takes you to the grand monument of the Bulund Darwaza. The Buland Darwaza rises above the courtyard of the mosque. It is semi octagonal in plan and is topped by pillars and chhatris. The central archway is richly decorated with a wide streak of yellow buff sandstone, edged by red sandstone panels and two square panels on its base on both side with black and white marble inlay work. The arch resembles the model of Jama Masjid. Three kiosks grace its top and it is surrounded by thirteen smaller domed cubicles. The smaller turrets around the gateway accentuate its magnificence and splendor. Three main openings adorned by decorative motifs on the borders and the three other vaulted openings capped by a semi-dome add to the brilliance of the structure.
Considered to be the highest gateway in the world, it is one of the prime tourist attractions in India. One of the striking features of the structure is the facet of religious tolerance of Akbar that is established by an inscription on the central face of the Buland Darwaza.
A visit to the Bulund Darwaza on you tour to Agra will help you delve deeper into the Mughal architectural genius.
