Sprawled over a total area of 9630 sq. kms, the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve in West Bengal features a vast tract of forest and saltwater swamp stretching for about 160 miles along the Bay of Bengal. General information about Sunderban:
Created in 1973, the Sunderban Tiger Reserve covers an area of 2585 sq. km, out of which the total land area is about 1600 sq. km. and water body over 985 sq. km. Within this area, 1330 sq. km. forms the core area, which was declared a National Park in 1984.
The Sajnekhali Wildlife sanctuary was created in 1976 within the buffer zone of the Sunderbans National park. This sanctuary covers an area of about 362 sq. km. The whole of the Sunderbans area was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1989.
Major Flora in the Sunderbans:
Named after the Sundari trees which grow in abundance in the region, the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve grows a wide variety of trees that typically thrive in estuarine conditions of high salinity, minimal soil erosion and regular inundation by high tides. The main forest types found in the region include tidal swamp forests, saline water type mixed forests, brackish water type mixed forests and palm swamp type forests. Out of the near-64 plant species in Sunderbans, the main species include Excaecaria , Heritiera , Ceriops , Phoenix , Sonneratia , Avicennia , Rhizophora, Xylocarpus and Bruguiera .
Wildlife in the Sunderbans:
The tidal rivers and mangrove forests of the Sunderbans National Pak provide refuge to numerous aquatic and semi-aquatic animals that thrive in tidal swamp areas. The forests are home to a wide variety of wild animals including spotted deer, monkeys, wild pigs, herons, white bellied eagles, kingfishers and the Royal Bengal Tiger. The tigers of Sunderbans are known to be mostly man-eaters. Some of the endangered wildlife species that inhabit the Sunderbans area include Estuarine Crocodile, River Terrapin (Batagur baska), Olive Ridley Turtle, Gangetic Dolphin, Ground Turtle, Hawks Bill Turtle, King Crabs (Horse shoe). A number of Trans-Himalayan migratory birds also seek refuge in the Sunderbans.
