History
The history of Rajkot has been quite significant and this town has played an instrumental role in the Indian Independence Movement.
The town of Rajkot was founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja of the Jadeja clan and Raju Sandhi in the year 1612 AD. Rajkot was conquered by Masum Khan in 1720 A.D and its name was also changed to Masumabad. Later on Masumabad was annexed by the Jadeja clan and its name was once again restored to the name Rajkot. Under the Rajput clan, Darbargadh palace was built and afterwards, two lakes namely Lalpari and Randarda were also constructed.
To moderate all the princely states, the British founded the Saurashtra agency in Rajkot. Under the British rule many imposing colonial buildings and educational institutions, like Connaught Hall and The Rajkumar College were constructed.
After Indian independence, Rajkot became capital of the State of Saurashtra, which was headed by the chief minister U. N. Dhebar. The state was merged with Gujarat when the states were reorganized in 1960. Present day Rajkot is a famous center for trade and commerce and also an important tourist getaway.

Rajkot is characterized by a tropical wet and dry climate with dry summers from mid-March to mid-June. The wet monsoon season begins from mid-June and lasts till October. November to February is the pleasant time of the year and the average temperature is around 20�C, with little humidity. The ideal time to visit Rajkot would be from October to March.
