Periyar is one of the most well preserved biosphere reserves in India and is an important tourist attraction in the state of Kerala. It was in the year 1933 that S.C.H. Robinson was made the first game warden of the park and a year later Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary was formed here. Another important event took place in the Periyar�s history when it was declared a wildlife sanctuary. Due to an appreciable number of tigers in this sanctuary it was declared as Tiger reserve in the year 1978, thus adding to the park�s importance. Four years later in the year 1982 it got the preliminary notification of the central region as a National Park.
Considering the wide ranging natural treasures of this important biosphere reserve, the India Eco-development Project was launched in the year 1996. Later in the year 2001 it was reorganized into two divisions that are namely Periyar East and Periyar West.
Periyar National Park has a predominantly moist deciduous type of vegetation with tall grasslands in some places. You can also come across the swamps and shrubs growing all around. There is a wide range of wild animals that you can encounter during your visit to Periyar. Among the mammalians you can come across gaur, sambar (horse deer), barking deer, mouse deer, Dholes (Indian wild dogs), mongoose, foxes and leopards.
The reptilian species comprise of turtles, lizards, monitor lizards, python and also King Cobra.
The large variety of birds is among the best known wildlife species of Periyar and you can capture them in your cameras during your visit to the park. Some of the most notable bird species are darters, cormorants, kingfishers, the great Malabar hornbill and racket-tailed Drongos.
