Brief History:
New Delhi was built in early 20th century, as part of the British government�s plans of shifting the capital from Calcutta. The new city was planned by the famous British architect Edwin Lutyens and eventually built towards the South of Shahjahanabad, the Old Delhi built by Mughul Emperor Shahjahan in the 17th century. Building materials were procured from the nearby sites and old monuments, and although a large number of magnificent new structures were built for official and residential purposes, the British allowed many major historical monuments to stand amidst the new city. Formal announcement of the shift of capital to New Delhi was made by King George V in the famous Delhi Durbar of 1911.
