History
After the Anglo-Nepalese War, the Kumaon hills came under the rule of the British. In the year 1841 Naini Tal was founded by P. Barron who was a European merchant.The virgin hills appealed so much to the British that they started frequenting this town to escape from the dust and scorching summers of the plains. The history of the region is full of references to natural disasters and in the year 1880, a devastating landslide occurred and many lives were lost. This earthquake demolished the Assembly Rooms and Naina Devi Temple very badly.
Lots of European schools for the boys and girls were established in Nainital and they are still rated as some of the best schools in the country at present. Present day Nainital is a burgeoning town in terms of tourism and is largely visited by the tourists for its breathtaking natural splendor.
