Trekking and Mountaineering at Ladakh

Ladakh, popularly called the Moon Land, is the most remote region of India. Ladakh, with barren high altitude desert, grey-brown landscape devoid of vegetation except around rivers, offers some of the most unusual and spectacular treks.

The trek to the base of Stok-Kangri peak/Matho-La Pass, is one such trek.

Trekking in LadakhCovering an area of about 60,000 square kilometers and ranging in elevation from 2,600 meters to 670 meters, Ladakh is sandwiched between two huge mountains systems-the karakorams to the north and the Himalayas to the south. It is an area which, due to its remoteness and proximity to Tiber, retained much of the character of the Tibetan way of life, with regular trade and barter continuing and trade routes being utilized as they were since they were first discovered. These routes offer exciting avenues for anybody game for a high altitude adventure.

Adventure is plenty in Ladakh. Trekking possibilities include short day-long walks up and down mountain slopes leading to quiet villages and monastic settlements.

Essential arrangements for the trek and the hiring of the staff/porters can be done at Leh. The best time to go is between June and August.
