There are many must watch sites in the city, popularly known as the Pink City due to the pink color of a large number of buildings. The Hawa Mahal is undoubtedly the best known tourist attraction in Jaipur. The other notable places of interest are the Amber Fort, the city Palace, the Jaigarh Fort, and the Jantar Mantar.
The Hawa Mahal, literally meaning the wind palace, is not a residential building. It is an extension of the zenana, or the ladies quarters of the city palace that faces one of the major roads of the city. This uniquely designed building was built to enable the royal women watch the citys processions on the important occasions while remaining hidden from public view. The pyramidal shape of the building and over 900 screened windows make this structure look like a giant honeycomb. The windows filter sunlight in a way that presents a spectacular sight, especially at dawn. The windows are designed in such a way that they provide a very efficient system of air-circulation that keeps the interiors of the building cool. The Hawa Mahal is the most famous tourist attraction in Jaipur and has become a symbol of the city.
The Jaigarh fort and the Amber Fort are counted among the famous forts of Rajasthan. The Amber fort was originally a part of Jaigarh Fort, but is now given its own position as a major tourist attraction in Jaipur. The Amber fort is an elegant palace located just below the Jaigarh Fort. It is famous for its architecture, which is a blend of the mughul and Rajput traditions. The Jaigar Fort is a formidable structure and holds the proud distinction of not being attacked by any invaders ever. The major attraction of the fort is its defense system, the pinnacle of which is the Jaivana cannon, claimed to be the worlds largest cannon on wheels. The museums in these forts exhibit interesting artifacts related to the history and culture of the region..
The Jantar Mantar is a medieval astronomical observatory. Built by maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, an avid astronomer, this complex houses large stone structures that are still used as devices of observing and calculating the occurrence of major astronomical events. Man Singh built four other similar structures during his reign.
