A chief lure among the majority of trekkers and mountaineers across the world is the Himalayan expeditions. These Himalayan expeditions comprise a huge domain involving exciting treks to various places in India, Bhutan and Nepal. One of the most important trekking options that are extensively undertaken by most trekkers is the Himalayan Expedition Northern India.
Among the popular treks of Himalayan expedition Northern Indian you can opt to traverse the state of Uttaranchal which offers treks to Nachiketa Tal, Dodi Tal, Dayara Bugyal (bugyal, a high-altitude meadow), Sat Tal, Kedar Tal, Gangotri-Gaumukh-Nandanvan Tapovan and to Yamunotri (the source of the river Yamuna).
Nachiketa Tal can be entered from Chaurangi-Khal (29 km from Uttarkashi town by road) and a further trek of 3 km through scenic settings. A PWD inspection bungalow makes for good accommodation facility at Chaurangi-Khal. For Dodi Tal, trekkers can take the road via Kalyani. From there you have to go further 5 km to Agoda. The trek to Dodi Tal (16 km) climbs from here rambling through thick forests and spectacular hilly landscape. The lake, located at an altitude of 3,307 m, has various accommodation facilities in the forms of a forest rest house and a log cabin.
Serious trekkers can desire treks beyond Dodi Tal to Yamunotri. The trail from Dodi Tal to Hanuman Chatti is a stretch of 27 km and Yamunotri a further 13 km from there. The trek to Dayara Bugyal starts from Barsu, near Bhatwadi (32 km from Uttarkashi en route to Gangotri). The trek itself is about 8 km and rises up to an elevation of about 10,000 feet. During winters the approximately 28 sq km expanse of gradual slopes makes the place perfect for skiing. Those planning to stay on better arrange for tents, details of which can be obtained from the GMVN or Uttar Pradesh Tourism (UPT) offices.
Sat Tal (or the seven lakes) is reachable from Dharali, 74 km from Uttarkashi, on the way to Gangotri. A short trek of 7 km will guide you to this memorable group of lakes. While Gangotri and the motorable path from Uttarkashi to Gangotri are thoroughly enchanting, the former offers trekking options as well, although mostly in the higher regions. A tourist bungalow and several other lodging facilities (which must be booked in advance during the yatra season) are various lodging options in Gangotri. The 18-km trek to Kedartal will take you to an altitude of 15,000 feet and proves to be one of the tougher expeditions in Himalayas. It is advisable to go the extra mile up to the glaciers top at Gaumukh-the source of the mighty Ganges. It comprises an 18 km from Gangotri but the trek is relatively easier. Trek 6 km further up from Gaumukh to Nandanvan Tapovan which needs experienced feet as it involves traversing the glacier itself. Here you can witness the many famous peaks like the Satopanth, Shivling, and Kalindi Khal.
