Dharamshala is a picturesque town located in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The town is surrounded by the Himalayas and is one of the most important tourist places in Himachal Pradesh. History:
The area was originally used as a cantonment for a native regiment of the British army. Gradually it gained in popularity as a popular summer getaway for British officials in Delhi. The Tibetan connection started when in 1960, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru offered permission to establish a Government in exile to the Dalai Lama, who had left Tibet after the Chinese invasion. Since then many more Tibetan refugees have settled down in Dharamshala in the area known as Mc Leod Gunj in upper Dharamshala.

McLeod gunj � the main Tibetan settlement in Dharamshala is also called little Lhasa. The peaceful place is an important pilgrimage for Buddhists from all over the world. The major attraction here is the large and beautiful monastery , also called the dalai Lama monastery as it is the present residence of the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala from where he leads the free Tibet movement. Mc Leod Gunj is also home to the Dal lake , which has religious significance and is the venue of an annual fair in September.
Bhagsunath temple � this temple is perched high on the hills in absolutely tranquil surroundings. The temple is very popular among the locals as well as regular tourists. The temple complex is attractive in design and offers splendid views of the magnificent landscape all around.
Dharamkot � It is the location of a popular temple, and offers wonderful panoramic views of the Dhoula Dhar and Kangra Valleys. Dharamkot is also the starting point of one of the best trekking routes in Himachal Pradesh that goes up to Triund.
Triund � Triund can be reached from Dharamkot after an enjoyable trek on narrow meandering stone laid paths. The trek takes around 3-4 hours and the view from Triund is fascinating. The altitude of Triund is 2975 meters.
