Chittorgarh



Chittorgarh is located in the South Eastern part of the Indian state of Rajasthan. The district covers a total area of about 10,856 square km which is about 3.17% of the total geographical area of the state. The city is bounded by the Aravalli Hills on all sides. The major rivers passing through the city are the Chambal, Banas, Bedach, Jakaharn, Gambhiri, and Gunjali. The Chittorgarh Fort is regarded as one of the most wonderful forts in India and is situated on a 180 m high hillock covering an area of about 700 acres and is believed to be built in the 7th Century. One can enter the fort after crossing seven gateways protected by watch towers and iron spiked doors. The fort is also called the �Water Fort� and had 84 water bodies of which 22 still exist.   • Tower of Victory (Vijay Stambh): This 9 storey tower is a 15th Century tower built by Rana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over Muhammad Khilj. The tower is adorned beautifully with sculptures of Hindu deities.

  • Rana Kumbah Palace: The Palace is a massive monument in the fort of Chittaur which is now in the ruins. It is believed that Queen Padmini and other Rajpur women committed Jauhar in this palace.

  • Jain Temples: There are six Jain temples in the fort of Chittor. The largest among them is the temple dedicated to Bhagawan Adinatha with fifty-two devkulikas. The seven-storied Kirtistambh, built in the 14th Century is dedicated Bhagawan Adinatha.

  • Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary: The sanctuary covering an area of about 50 square km is situated near Bassi and is located on the Western fringes of the Vindhyachal Ranges. Important animals that are found in this sanctuary include panthers, wild boars, antelopes, and mongoose. A large number of resident and migratory birds are also found in the sanctuary.

  • Sanwariyaji Temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is one of the most visited places in the city. The temple has been recently renovated and decorated with glasses.

    Air: Dabok Airport is the nearest airport which is about 90 km from Chittorgarh and is linked by daily air services from New Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
