History
According to a legend, Bangalore has derived its name from an old woman, who lived in this area and offered a humble meal of boiled beans to a lost Hoysala ruler. The source of the present city of Bangalore can be traced to the early 16th century. Bangalore gained eminence in the 18th century, when it became a significant fort city, under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Bangalore has stood silent witness to the struggle between Tipu Sultan and the British. Tipu Sultan got defeated in the hands of British and consequently it was subjugated. In the year 1831, Bangalore was made the regional administrative city and a huge cantonment was built here.
