Ajmer tours travel India

Travel to Ajmer

Discovered in the 7th century A.D by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan, Ajmer is located in the south west of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan. One of the most traveled tourist destinations in India, Ajmer opens up a host of architectural specimens exhibiting a unique style of architecture. A major pilgrimage site of the Hindus and the Muslims, it is witness to the advent of huge numbers of tourists from various parts of the world.

Reigned by Prithvi Raj Chauhan, the historic city of Ajmer served as a prime centre of the Chauhan power till 1193 A.D, when Prithvi Raj Chauhan lost to Mohammed Ghauri. Subsequently it became a part of the sultanate of Delhi. Located on the lower slopes of Taragarh hill, in the Aravalli Range, the city of Ajmer has a large artificial lake, called Anasagar, to the north, decorated with a marble structure called Baradari.

A visit to Ajmer - one of the finest tourist attractions in India, will lead you to discover a different facet of the nation's history. Some of the major tourist attractions in Ajmer include Pushkar and the Dargah Shareef of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. A town in the state of Rajasthan near Ajmer, Pushkar is located about 14 km away, and is a prime tourist destination. The Pushkar Lake and the 14th century Hindu temple dedicated to Brahma are the two main tourist attractions here. The annual Camel Fair is another popular event that attracts several tourists from various parts of the country.

People on tour to India generally do not give a visit to the Dargah Shareef of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer a miss. Located at the base of the Taragarh hill, it houses several white marble buildings placed around two courtyards, comprising a huge gate gifted by the Nizam of Hyderabad, a mosque, Akbari Masjid, presented by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, and the Dargah or the domed tomb of the 13th-century Sufi Saint, Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti. Emperor Akbar visited this place on pilgrimage on foot from Agra every year in view of a vow to have a male heir.

Taragarh Fort, the fort of Ajmer, seat of the Chauhan rulers, is another of the tourist attractions in Ajmer. It is considered to be the first hill fort of Asia, constructed when the Aravalli mountain ranges were higher than the snowlines. One of the oldest among the hill forts in India, it has six gates. It also houses the Dargah of Miran Saheb, the then governor of the fort.

One of the must visits during your tour to India, and your subsequent trip to Ajmer is the Digambar Jain temple, also popularly called Soni Ji Ki Nasiyan. It is a red temple with a double- storey hall adjoining the main building. Appreciate the several large gilded wooden figures, illustrating tales from Jain mythology. Glass mosaic, precious stones, gold and silver work adorn the hall.
