  • The Mewar region has been one of the most renowned regions of Rajputana, as medieval Rajasthan was collectively called. This former princely state has produced brave kings and warriors who never hesitated before going to battle, and gallantly laid down their lives whenever required. The Sisodia rulers of the region were also great patrons of art, which is reflected in the buildings and palaces of the city of Udaipur. The Mewar festival, Udaipur, is one of the most famous festivals of the state as it coincides with the well known Gangaur festival. The festival is reminiscent of the folk traditions of Mewar and is still celebrated in traditional fashion.

The Mewar festival welcomes spring and coincides with the Gangaur festival, which is celebrated with a lot of zeal in Udaipur, the city of lakes. Gangaur is celebrated by women for marital happiness. The chief deities worshipped are Isar and Gangaur, forms of Shiva and his consort, Parvati. The colorful processions taken out with the idols are the major attraction of the festival. In Udaipur, the procession is carried to the Gangaur ghat on the banks of Lake Pichola. The idols are then carried on boats for immersion, accompanied by singing of traditional ritualistic songs. After the end of the Gangaur festivities, the Mewar festival continues with a host of cultural activities including songs, dances, puppet shows, and a variety of other interesting performances. A great many traditional musical instruments can be seen during the performances. The gala 3 day festival comes to an end with a spectacular fireworks display.

Since Udaipur presents a nice opportunity to experience two of the most famous Fairs and festivals of Rajasthan, tourists should try to visit the city during this time to make the most of their journey to Udaipur. There are many fascinating tourist attractions in this region. You cannot miss out on the Palaces and other attractions of the city. The chief attractions include - City Palace, Jag Mandir Palace, Lake Palace Udaipur, and Udaipur Solar Observatory. These are among the best known tourist attractions of Rajasthan. Besides these magnificent structures, if you travel during this period, you can witness two fascinating festivals. The Gangaur festival is a major highlight of tourism in Rajasthan, and has been promoted by the tourism department. Along with that the Mewar festival, Udaipur will certainly make your trip a memorable one.
