Haji Ali Mosque

Mumbai is a true cosmopolitan city. The whole of India can be seen here, living together and forming a unique culture of the city. Over the years Mumbai has seen an incredible influx of people from all parts of the country. The chief aim of these people is to find better opportunities. To them Mumbai is the city of dreams, a land of promises that beckons almost every small town youth having high ambitions in life. Apart from being the commercial capital of the country, Mumbai is also a major tourist spot in Maharashtra. The tourist attractions in Mumbai include a large number of impressive spots, among which, the Haji Ali Mosque holds tremendous religious importance. The beautiful building is one of the must visit sights of the city and is an inseparable part of tourism in Mumbai.

Legend has it that a wealthy merchant named Haji Ali renounced all worldly possessions and went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He died en-route and his body floated to the site of the mosque in a casket. Another story says that he drowned at this very spot. The mosque and tomb (dargah) is one of the most revered sites of Mumbai, and it is visited by tourists of all religions. The structure was reportedly built in 1631.

The Haji Ali mosque is built on an islet about 500 yards from the coast of Worli. It is linked to the mainland by a causeway which goes underwater during high tide, making the mosque accessible only during low tide. The white structure is 26 meters high and is surrounded by a small courtyard. A large gathering of pilgrims, foreigners, and musicians is seen here during the visiting hours. The Sufi songs enchant the tourists, adding to the pious ambience. At night this place is lit up and during high tide the entire structure seems to be floating on water, presenting an amazing sight. The number of tourists gathered at any point of time during low tide in Haji Ali Mosque proves its status as one of the best tourist spots of Mumbai. The eateries in front of the mosque and adjoining the main entrance are popular places for tourists to relax. A large number of vendors sell everything from electronic goods to religious books on the causeway leading up to the mosque. Apart from having religious significance, one can get a splendid view of the city and its skyscrapers from here. A visit to this important religious spot is highly recommended during a visit to Mumbai.
