Kannur Travel

Once an important port on the Arabian Sea, Kannur is today one of the major tourist attractions in Kerala. Kannur travel opens up a host of sightseeing options for the tourists visiting Kerala.

Kannur Tourist Attractions:
Kannur offers several tourist attractions for its visitors. Some of them have been discussed as under:

Fort St. Angelos:
Located to the west of Kannur town, Fort St. Angelos was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida, with the consent of the Kolathiris, on the promontory projecting into the Lakshadweep Sea.

The Dutch had seized the fort in 1663 then sold it to the Ali Raja of Kannur in 1772, and eventually in 1790 it came into the control of the British. The British reconstructed it and made it their prime post in Malabar. Fairly well maintained, with a few parts having collapsed the fort is home to a few ancient cannons that are on display. The fort is protected and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Thalassery Fort:
The British set foot in Thalassery in 1683 and built a trading shed there. They shifted their commercial capital from Kozhikode to Thalassery and in 1700 the British erected the Thalassery fort on a little hillock called Tiruvellapadakunnu. In 1708, it was further strengthened by the formation of bastions. The fort is a square structure made of laterite and is notable for its huge ventilated walls and flanking bastions. Haiders captain is said to have been imprisoned here. The famous St. Johns Anglican Church one of the finest Kannur tourist attractions, stands behind this fort.

Snake Park at Parassinikadavu:
Located at a distance of 18 kms from Kannur town, the snake park at Parassinikadavu is one of the well known snake parks in the state. The park is devoted to the conservation of various species of snakes, most of which are on the verge of becoming extinct. A huge collection of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes are preserved here. Snake demonstrations are conducted every hour and they attract several crowds to Kannur.

Payyambalam Beach Resort:
One of the most beautiful beaches in Kerala, the Payyambalam beach near Kannur town is a perfect getaway far from the din of city life.

Moppila Bay:
Located near Fort St. Angelos in Kannur, Moppila Bay is a natural fishing harbor. A sea wall jutting out from the fort divides the rough sea and inland water. The bay was well-known during the Kolathiris rule as a commercial harbor that connected Kolathunadu with Lakshadweep and other foreign countries. Today, Moppila Bay has turned into an updated fishing harbor, expanded under the Indo-Norwegian pact.
