Other Beaches of Kerala
A visit to the beautiful state of Kerala on the southwestern tip of Indian subcontinent along the Malabar Coast will allow you to discover some of the most exotic beaches of Kerala. Apart from the Kovalam Beach, Varkala Beach, Kappad Beach, Alappuzha Beach and Fort Kochi Beach there is a host of other beaches in Kerala that attract the attention and interest of several around the world.
All the Kerala beaches exude individual charisma in their individual ways. However, none of them will deprive you of some of the nicest experiences like the walks on the shimmering golden sands, strolling in the shades of the palm trees adjoining the beaches and the soft bites into the tender coconuts sold here by the locals. The other beaches in Kerala apart from the well known options can be discussed as below:
Bekal
Chowara
Sankhumugham Beach
Marari Beach (Mararikulam)
Thirumullavaram Beach
Beypore Beach
Bekal Beach:
Situated at a distance of 14 Km from Kasargod, Bekal Beach stands located near Bekal Fort which is one of the best-kept historic forts in Kerala. Positioned on a promontory that stretches for 35 acres and arriving at the Arabian Sea, the Bekal Fort occupies a commanding position on a headland. Enshrouded with shrubs, the hills entice adventurous trekkers to climb up the rocky promontory from Bekal Beach. The embankment of Bekal Fort has a canon jutting out towards the sea. A mosque located close by, constructed by Tipu Sultan adds to the historic attractions of Bekal Beach. The beach is an excellent instance of friendly cultural bonding among the Dutch, Portuguese, and the local Kings in the pre-colonial era.
Reaching Bekal Beach is easy as the nearest airport is Mangalore in Karnataka, which is located 50 km away. Kasargod is linked by road and rail to the rest of Kerala. There are many options of accommodation in the forms of lodges and guesthouses near Bekal Beach. It is best to visit Bekal Beach in the months between August and March.
Chowara Beach:
A relatively less explored beach, the Chowara Beach is located 9 kms south of the renowned Kovalam Beach. The beach is an ideal hotspot for nature and leisure travelers where you can enjoy walking on the verdant greens, gentle sea breeze and the blue waters. Stretching from Manaltheeram/Somatheeram to Poovar Island resort, this beach of Kerala is home to renowned heritage and Ayurvedic resorts.
Sankhumugham Beach:
Adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram Airport and Veli Tourist Village, the Sankhumugham Beach is a preferred haunt of sunset watchers and nature lovers on the whole. A huge, alluring sculpture of a mermaid welcomes visitors. An indoor amusement club, childrens park and a star shaped food joint are some of the facilities available at the beach. Being a fishermen village it guarantees you of an interesting sight of fishermen accomplishing their daily catch.
Marari Beach at 12 km from Alleppey, Beypore Beach at 10 km to the south of Kozhikode, Thirumullavaram Beach at 6 km to the north of Kollam are the other nice beaches in Kerala.
The other beaches of Kerala offer some of the equally enticing features as the otherwise popular ones. Wherever you travel, popular or virgin beaches, do not forget to carry your sunscreen lotion light summer clothes and wide-brimmed hats.
