About Kovalam Beach:
Stretched over 4 km, Kovalam Beach is one of the favorite tourist spots for travelers visiting the state of Kerala on the Malabar Coast in southwestern India. Situated barely 16 kms from the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram, the Kovalam Beach has been a choicest option for tourists since the 1930s.
The Kovalam Beach actually consists of three adjoining crescent beaches, Lighthouse, Samudra, and Hawah each separated by rocky promontories. The southernmost, called the Lighthouse beach, is the most frequently thronged one and further down beyond the Light House, is the tiny village of Vizhinjam, an important fishing centre with a beach of its own. The Hawah or the Eves Beach is semi-circular in shape. Best visited during the months from September to March, the Kovalam Beach is a lovely holidaying option with the glittering sands, blue waters and palm fringes.
History of Kovalam Beach:
Kovalam Beach was first recognized and eventually popularized as a tourist destination as early as the 1930s by the European guests of the then Travancore kingdom. However, it got its due much later as an ideal beach resort in the early seventies with the advent of the Hippies. It marked the beginning of the procedure of the conversion of just a simple fishing village of Kerala into one of the excellent holiday spots in the world. Presently some of the foreign corporate houses are helping out in the advent of chartered tourists to Kovalam beach apart from the usual travelers.
